Antique Mantel & Carriage Clocks

The very earliest clocks often took the form of mantel clocks and for the last three hundred years they have been an essential form of time keeper in all their variations. Early mantel clocks are generally large and English, where as French and German clockmakers had their greatest success with generally less expensive clocks made throughout the 19th century.

Repeating Carriage Clock With Alarm

The making of carriage clocks reached its height in the late 19thcentury, the trade carried on well in to the 20th century with many fine examples such as this. Beautifully finished with a white dial and decorative dial mask this is a fine example of a repeating French carriage clock.  Fitted with a high quality fully jewelled Swiss lever escapement and striking the hours and half hours on a coil gong this dramatic clock was made to be admired both as a work of art and a scientific instrument.  An added detail is the alarm work that was designed to make the clock more complicated and interesting and along with this is the ability to repeat the last hour by pressing the top case button, probably never meant to be used regularly.

English Double Fusee Mantel Clock

This is one of the most delightful double fusee bracket clocks that it has ever been my good fortune to sell!  At a time when English clock makers were making large hand built cases and movements, here was a maker who was clearly asked to make a clock of similar quality but to a much smaller proportional size.  The result is a fine elegant English clock with flame veneers, brass inlay and original frets, handles and finials etc. but of fine elegant proportions.  Note the detail of the inverted pendulum bob and regulator that was made to fit in the small space provided.

This attractive clock was made for the English market in the late 19thcentury by a French clock maker working in Paris.  Beautifully finished throughout there is fine detail in the silvered and enamel dial with blued steel hands and a fine quality movement with an English lever platform escapement.  The case is known as an ‘English’ design with a barrel handle and case mouldings designed with sharp corners.

A very attractive and most unusual example of a high quality French clock made for the English market at the end of the nineteenth century. The classic lancet style case is beautifully decorated with fine satinwood inlay with both pattern and stringing detail. This fine design work highlights the high quality white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, which retains its original patterned brass hands and bevel-edged convex glass. The case is nicely finished with original bun feet.  Note the fine detail of the floral decoration in the dial centre which compliments the highly decorative hands. The typically high quality French movement strikes the hours and half-hours on original gong, which is typical of the better quality clocks of the period.

Made for the English market in the late 19th century this high quality German clock owes a great deal of its design to early English clock makers.  The reeded canted case corners and fretted side panels along with the caddy case top with handle were all styles used by English clock makers in the early 18th century and reproduced hear 150 years later in a smaller size.  The high quality movement strikes and chimes the hours and quarters on original blued steel gongs giving the clock a very individual style.

Elliott’s were the last true manufacturers of clocks in England making clocks in Sussex throughout the 19th and well in to the 20th century.  Their work was always highly prized for its quality and design detail and has become highly collectable in recent years.  This is a good example of their work with a classic Elliott movement . The case is finished with an attractive caddy top and brass corner feet.  This has the added advantage of striking the hours and half hours on a delightful polished bell .

 

French Ormolu Mantel Clock

A stunning example of French design made for the English market in the late 19th century.  The dramatic ormolu case retains its original mercurial gilding gold complete with individual case pillars and finials and standing on its original pad which has been recovered to show the case at its best advantage.  The high quality movement strikes the hours and half hours on the original blued steel gong and is of similar quality to the case.  Clocks of this high quality and detail are rare and, given the right setting, are delightful clocks to own.

 

Elliott Three Train Mantel Clock

Elliott were the last clockmakers in Britain who made a wide range of quality mechanical clocks.  Each one was hand built and they are highly prized for there quality throughout.  This clock is typical of their work having a very high quality triple chime movement which plays tunes on a fine set of gongs every quarter of an hour whilst striking the full hour.  The art deco style case is beautifully finished with burr case veneers and attractive silvered dial.

Made in the late 19th century by a French clock maker for the English market, this charming brass cased mantel clock was made to a very high standard with a fine quality striking movement sounding on original gong and a high quality case, similar in many respects to a brass sided French carriage clock.  Clearly made as a substantial but fully portable mantel clock, it was meant to be substantial in its strong design and heavy brass handle yet small enough to move around the house if so desired.

The Elliott clock company were making clocks in Susses throughout the 19th century and well in to the 20thcentury, they can be considered the last true clockmakers in England.  Their work was always to a very high standard with traditional designs to movement, dials and cases, often echoing much larger and earlier English bracket clocks.  This classic Elliott clock is made with simple bottom mouldings giving the clock a very pleasing, uncluttered, appearance.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, French clockmakers established themselves as manufacturers of high quality movements which could be placed inside a wide variety of cases.  One of the great successes was used for this timepiece movement with its clear dial, convex glass, bevelled edge and brass bevel which could be fitted into attractive mahogany cases with detailed inlay such as this.  The movement retains its original cylinder escapement which has been carefully restored to retain the originality of the clock.

French clockmakers in the nineteenth century often took their inspiration from early English clocks. This meant taking the heavy designs of the eighteenth century and making them more delicate and well defined to suite the finer design qualities of the French makers. This is a classic example of such clocks with brass side handles and case feet. The fine white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals and blued steel hands is typical of better quality French clocks of the period and this is emphasised by the high quality mahogany veneers and stringing detail to the case. The particular clock has a very attractive strike on the hour and half-hour on the original blued steel gong.
