Late 1690s French onion verge pocket watch
Very early single-hand verge onion pocket watch made in France circa 1690s by well-known maker Duquesne in Paris. The case is in beautiful condition, made of solid brass in a traditional onion style shape that was later gilded with 22-carat gold. The gilding is intended to protect the case from the elements. The two-part case encases the exquisitely made movement, manufactured in a traditionally French style with robust plates and shaped pillars. This particular movement presents an unusual winding system through the centre arbour. This watch retains the original delicately decorated keys made of 9 carat gold; however, they serve only a decorative purpose as they are very worn and not safe to use.
The dial is made of brass, beautifully gilded and ornated with enamel cartouche numerals. The single hand that indicates the hour shows an early feature as well as an early type of movement. The movement is in working order and keeps good time, however, due to its age, this is a museum piece, not intended for everyday use and should be treated accordingly.
